چکیده

A sample of 7 new stars ranging in metallicity from [Fe/H]=−2.0 to [Fe/H]=−0.75 has been analyzed in the boron spectral region. The spectra were observed with the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS) of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The targets were selected on the basis of their lithium and beryllium abundances in order to investigate in a more complete way light element depletion and internal mixing by comparing all 3 elements Li, Be, and B at once in the same objects. Four stars out of 7 are characterized by strongly depleted Li and Be abundances, compared to stars of similar characteristics. We find that 2 of them (HD 2665 and HD 3795) are also significantly B-depleted. Two others (HD 106516 and HD 221377) have normal or near normal B abundances despite being depleted by a factor ≥10 in both Li and Be abundances. These stars place strong constraints on the nature and depth of the mixing processes responsible for their light element abundances. Two other stars, HD 94028 and HD 194598, are found to have normal B abundances, despite a 0.3 dex difference in their Be abundances claimed by Thorburn & Hobbs (1996). We consider the reported Be difference unconfirmed. The 7th star belonging to this cycle of HST observations is HD 160617. Although subjected to a separate analysis (Primas et al. 1998a), it has also been included here because of the remarkable aspect of its low B, probably low Be, and completely normal Li. No stellar destruction mechanism can explain this. Rather, chemical inhomogeneities in the halo could be the cause.

Light Element Abundance Patterns in the Orion Association : I ) HST Observations of Boron in G - dwarfs

The boron abundances for two young solar-type members of the Orion association, BD -6 1250 and HD294297, are derived from HST STIS spectra of the B I transition at 2496.771 Å. The best-fit boron abundances for the target stars are 0.13 and 0.44 dex lower than the solar meteoritic value of log ǫ(B)=2.78. An anticorrelation of boron and oxygen is found for Orion when these results are added to pr...

Boron provides a special probe below the stellar surface as it survives to greater depths than do Li and Be. To search for B depletions we have observed B in 13 F and G dwarfs with large Be depletions; for comparison we also obtained spectra of five stars which are undepleted in Li and Be. We have used HST with STIS to obtain spectra of the B I resonance line at 2497 Å. The spectral resolution ...

Boron Abundances in Main Sequence B-type Stars: A Test of Rotational Depletion during Main Sequence Evolution

Boron abundances have been derived for seven main sequence B-type stars from HST STIS spectra around the B III 2066Å line. In two stars, boron appears to be undepleted with respect to the presumed initial abundance. In one star, boron is detectable but it is clearly depleted. In the other four stars, boron is undetectable implying depletions of 1 to 2 dex. Three of these four stars are nitrogen...

Implications of a Subthreshold Resonance for Stellar Beryllium Depletion

Abundance measurements of the light elements lithium, beryllium, and boron are playing an increasingly important role in the study of stellar physics. Because these elements are easily destroyed in stars at temperatures (2–4) × 10K, the abundances in the surface convective zone are diagnostics of the star’s internal workings. Standard stellar models cannot explain depletion patterns observed in...

Boron in the extreme Pop II star HD 140283 and the production of light elements in the Early Galaxy ⋆

Using observations of the 2496.7 Å B i line with the HST GHRS at a nominal resolution of 90,000, we have found the abundance of boron of HD140283 to be log ǫB(= 12 + log(NB/NH)) = 0.34 ± 0.20. This result is found when a significant non-LTE effect in the formation of the B i line is taken into account. The resulting NB/NBe ratio is about 17 (in the range 9 – 34), which is in very good agreement...
